Lighthouse Island/Lotseninsel Schleimünde

Dimensions: 420 x 300 mm, watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £150 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Not an island but the very tip of a peninsula, with a lighthouse watching over the entrance to the Schlei form the Baltic Sea. You can only get here by boat, because a bird reserve just slightly out of sight from this view has no public right of way. Recent winter storms have sadly done a lot of damage to the Lotseninsel, which used to have a cafe and gift shop in the summer months. Will they be able to open again this year though?

Swans on the Thames

Dimensions: 180 x 125 mm, watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £35 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

I was trying to sketch a complicated river scene on a cold day in late autumn and these two kept coming up to see if I had any snacks to give away. I didn’t, but did a drawing of them there and added watercolour at home.

Alive, alive-o

Dimensions: 240 x 320 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £55 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

I kept humming Molly Malone to myself for some reason while doing this one!

The Old Jetty

Dimensions: 455 x 305 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £120 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Did I mention that I like the sound of gently lapping waves on rocks of all sizes and shades?

Hummingbird

Dimensions: 140 x 220 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £45 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

No wonder hummingbirds look busy. Imagine having to eat the equivalent of your bodyweight every single day!

Starfish

Hidden feeling

Original artwork by Suzy Dittmar for the poem “Hidden Feeling” by Stuart Lindsay.

Dimensions: 454 x 305 mm, watercolour and gouache on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £150 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

I am fascinated by rocks under water. The longer you look, ideally with gentle waves lapping your bare feet, the more you see. “Hidden Feeling” is also one of my absolute favourite poems ever.

Schönhagen Cliffs

Dimensions: 410 x 310 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £150 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

The cliffs near Schönhagen, Schleswig-Holstein, Baltic Sea. This beach is part of my dad’s favourite walk. He likes looking for amber, I like looking at rocks. We both like looking at birds. What’s not so nice about this scene is that the cliffs are dropping into the sea at an alarming rate. The coastal path on top of the cliffs has to be moved further and further inland all the time.

“I’m Going in”

Dimensions: 360 x 260 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £120 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Whatever (ad)venture you are considering – just go for it, but tread gently!

Rainbow herring

Dimensions: 200 x 200 mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm tinted watercolour paper, unframed, £55 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

This fish counter in my home town shows pickled herring in all its traditional variety – beetroot, dill and mustard, yoghurt and cream… a bit like crisps in the UK. What’s your favourite?

Rocks and Shells

Dimensions: 297 x 210 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £70 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

When you see rocks and shells in shallow water, do you find yourself wondering what’s inside, what’s behind, and who might be hiding?

Midsummer Bonfires

Dimensions: 200 x 200 mm, ink, watercolour and gouache on tinted watercolour paper, unframed, £55 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

In Denmark, midsummer is celebrated in the evening of June 23, the night before St John’s Day (Sankt Hans Aften).

Mind Your Step

Dimensions: 455 x 305 mm, watercolour and gouache on watercolour paper, unframed, £150 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Blue jellyfish and Lion’s Mane jellyfish on a Baltic beach. There seemm to be more of these mildly stinging jellies these days rather than the harmless, translucent moon jellyfish we were most used to seeing as I grew up. Don’t let them stop you from going for a dip or a paddle, just give them a bit of space…

Iceland Series

Dimensions: Paper 154 x 154 mm each, image approx 130 x 134 mm each, watercolour and gouache on khadi paper, unframed, £35 each or £180 for all six (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

I visited Iceland a few years ago and was entranced. I especially loved all the outdoor swimming pools with water from nearby hot springs, and all the mosses, lichens and tiny wildflowers.

Schlei Beach at Boknis

Dimensions: 210 x 148 mm, watercolour hot press watercolour paper, unframed, £75 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

The Schlei has lots of lovely small beaches, not many are accessible by car. This is one of my favourites on the Angeln side (Angeln being the peninsula of Anglo-Saxon fame).

The View from Rabelsund

Dimensions: paper 150 x 210 mm, actual image size 125 x 190 mm, ink and watercolour on khadi paper, unframed, £35 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Rabelsund is a tiny beach on the Schlei, a Baltic Sea inlet in the far north of Germany. Looking across, you can see another tiny beach in a woodland called Ellenberger Wald. The Schlei is busy with sailing and fishing boats as well as paddle steamers taking passengers to Maasholm and to Schleimünde lighthouse.

Bullshit

Original artwork by Suzy Dittmar for the poem “Bullshit” by Stuart Lindsay.

Dimensions: 210 x 149 mm, ink and watercolour on 300gsm watercolour paper, unframed, £55 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

When I read Stuart’s poem, I thought of the glorious, steaming dung heap I had seen several times on early morning bike rides during lockdown in Surrey. I had a photo of that dung heap and used it as a model, then I combined it with a photo I had taken of a farm in Niesgrau in Northern Germany because the cows looked so sweet and inquisitive. I like that the dung heap dwarfs the big farm building. What images does this poem conjure up in your mind’s eye?

Fjord Rocks

Dimensions: image within mount 310 x 230 mm, mount size 410 x 340 mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £120 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

This picture is based on a photograph taken while beach walking near Gut Oehe on the Baltic Sea, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. I quite like beach walking on overcast days – you see more details. When I look at this painting, I hear the sound of tiny gentle lapping waves.

Jellyfish 1

Dimensions: image within mount 240 x 240 mm, mount size 345 x 355  mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £75 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Jellyfish on a Baltic Sea beach. After a photo taken on New Year’s Day north of Schönhagen. I took my winter boots and socks off and dipped my feet in the water for about a minute – staying well clear of these colourful beauties though.

Because I Love You

Original artwork by Suzy Dittmar for the poem “Because I love you” by Stuart Lindsay.

Dimensions: image within mount 113 x 173 mm, mount size 204 x 255  mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £65 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Albatross. In the top five of my favourite birds!

Starting Again

Original artwork by Suzy Dittmar for the poem “Starting again” by Stuart Lindsay.

Dimensions: image within mount 248 x 169 mm, mount size 350 x 280  mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £75 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Green Rock

Dimensions: image within mount 240 x 333 mm, mount size 341 x 445 mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £75 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Based on a photograph I took one late afternoon of rocks in the gorgeous Limfjord, Denmark. The rocks had tiny sea snails on it that seemed to give it a face, with sea grass for hair – but then I see faces in a lot of things.

Thirty-three

Dimensions: image within mount 248 x 168 mm, mount size 349 x 280 mm, watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper, mounted, £75 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Original illustration for Stuart Lindsay’s poem “Thirty-three”. When I read this one, it made me think of isolation and limitation – the see-through glass makes it seem as though the people can get out to make their worlds bigger, but that’s a fallacy. Yet each jar is unique and holds interesting things. How can we create more pathways between our jars?

Handbjerg Sunset

Dimensions: 360 x 260 mm, watercolour and ink pen on watercolour paper, unframed. £120 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Handbjerg, Limfjord, Denmark, is one of my all time favourite beaches.

Night Train

Original artwork by Suzy Dittmar for the poem “Night Train” by Stuart Lindsay.

Dimensions: 260 x 180 mm, watercolour and ink pen on watercolour paper, unframed. £55 (free package and posting within the UK, for postage abroad please ask).

Stuart’s poem made me think about train travel on the Continent in the 1960’s and 70’s. Those compartments used to have six seats that you could pull out at night to turn into one giant bed once you raised the arm rests as well. Journeys were loud and rattly and even though the ashtray invariably smelled of cigarettes, being on the train was cosy and exciting in equal measures.
